The other day I met up with my two sisters to try The Iron Press in Costa Mesa. The restaurant itself is located in The O.C. Mix Mart, a cozy market that features everything from handmade jewelry to an eclectic spice shop to an organic nail salon. Like Chloe Oliver, there is something for everyone. In fact, if I could think of one word to describe the Mart it would be community. The entire indoor and outdoor space and all of the activities that take place in it, intend to bring people together in a fun and organic way. Every restaurant in the area has that same approach—including The Iron Press.
Imagine a restaurant where you can order an array of traditional and creative sandwiches all on a sturdy, but not overly sweet Belgium waffle. That is exactly what the Iron Press delivers. You can get anything from a turkey club to fried chicken with sausage gravy on the waffles. We were in the indulging mood so we chose the latter, which was served with an addictive jalapeno maple syrup. After ordering their version of chicken and waffles and starting with an order of their Iron fries (homemade waffle fries with cheddar cheese, caramelized onions and crispy bacon), we somehow found room for another waffle with two farm fresh eggs, cheddar cheese, bacon, and arugula. Everything was cooked perfectly and the waffles were sturdy enough to hold up the toppings. We decided to skip the sweet waffles this time around but I plan on saving room and trying one next time because there will most definitely be a next time.
